The New Zealand possum is accepted worldwide as an ecological fur - it is also one of the most luxurious furs in the world.  Possums were introduced into New Zealand from Australia in the 1830's to start a fur trade.  They thrived on New Zealand's lush vegetation.  Lacking any natural predators, the possum has become a huge pest, with currently around 70 million in the country.  Now they consume approximately 20 tonne of vegetation per night causing enormous ecological damage to plant and bird life, as well as spreading diseases such as tuberculosis, to cattle and other farmed animals.  By purchasing a Merino Snug garment you are assisting in the restoration of New Zealand's native forests, animal habitats and bird life.
